| I would think that unlike a spring (which rebounds with a certain rate/frequency), rubber is just "mushy"... it absorbs energy rather than stores and returns it like a spring does. In a shock absorber's case, they also want those to be "mushy". If you just wanted it to rebound, you'd just use the car's springs. But you want to absorb that rebound and take away the oscillations. If a car just had springs it would be pretty smooth over bumps but it would bounce all over the place. But when you add shock absorbers, they dampen the rebound of the spring. Push down on your car sometimes. If it bounces a few times after it lets up, your shocks are shot. It should come back up and settle there. You want to absorb the energy, not store and return it.
